John Carmack, id Software has officially that will make available an open source version of its new graphics engine, as it did in the past to id Tech 3.

The technical director of id Software’s John Carmack announced that id Tech 5 , the graphics engine that will form the basis of Rage , will be released in the format open source since the publication of the game, scheduled in September.
The news was reported for the first time since the Linux community web site Phoronix , which indeed he initially thought that id Tech 5 be open source right now. The idea came from the image on the official website of Rage which is reported in this page. As mentioned, however, Carmack was quick to point out that id Tech 5 will be open source just after the release of Rage.

id Software has always looked with attention to the world Linux and developed versions of its games that run on this operating system with OpenGL rendering system. Enemy Territory Quake Wars, Quake 4 and Doom 3, in fact, have their own versions of Linux. Rage also will be available for this operating system, but this version will be released later than the main PC, Mac, PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.

The practice of providing an open source version of its technology is not new for id Software. All graphics engine to id Tech 3, that of Quake III Arena for comparison, were issued free of charge. This policy was not followed with id Tech 4 engine, Doom 3, and do not even seem to be no plans for the future.

id Tech 5 will mark its debut with Rage, and then we will see in Doom 4. More details on the games id Software and software technologies will be released in the Texas House of QuakeCon 2011 , which will be held August 4 to 7 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel, Dallas.
